About MIX NYC's A Different Take
MIX NYC's "A Different Take" (ADT) began in 2006 as a video production workshop for LGBTQ youth. While learning all phases of video production, students develop their artistic voices as they gain multimedia skills to craft a short video. This workshop prioritizes LGBTQ participants who identify as low-income, people of color, women, have little or no experience with creating multimedia & hail from NYC's 5 boroughs.
ADT commences in the summer of every year for an intensive immersion program that includes classes, demonstrations, guest filmmaker presentations, work in progress screenings, field trips, & feedback sessions with peers, instructors, & guest filmmakers. Every fall the collection of ADT videos then premiere at MIX NYC's "New York Queer Experimental Film Festival". This screening showcases the talents of ADT's nascent filmmakers who are often present in person to describe their process for making their very first video.
In 2008, ADT was conducted over five months during which time twelve students between the ages of 13 and 38 completed video installations, documentaries, narratives, & experimental pieces. It was the first time LGBTQ youth and adults participated in an intergenerational workshop that allowed for a rich cultural exchange across age, sexuality, ethnicity, & life experience.
